If you want to experience a fully engaged, enthusiastic SIF class, go to Mother Seton Academy! There, the sixth grade class meets on a late Wednesday afternoon and as you walk down the hall towards their classroom, you will hear giggles, laughing and students eagerly crying out numbers to solve math problems. One student bellows, ” I’M A MATHEMATICIAN!” as he figures out how to resolve a budget scenario. Their teacher, Ms. Lindsey, explains, “One of my most favorite moments teaching SIF is when students grasp concepts and this happens a lot in this classroom.”
Ms. Lindsey is a first-year teacher but not new to Mother Seton, as she is a former student. She earned her college degree from Seton Hill University and majored in communications. From there, she has worked in marketing and as a career coach with Baltimore City schools. She knows through her work in marketing that, “brand recognition, it’s an important component in the SIF curriculum. It’s what connects students to become fully interested in investing.” During the first couple of weeks in the program, students become familiar with the companies they can virtually invest in. This creates a desire to learn more.
Ms. Lindsey describes her class as meaningfully engaged. They ask a lot of great questions, and their hands always go up ready to answer questions.” They really, really are interested! Towards midyear classes, they had the choice to stay or leave SIF and all the students stayed!” Ms. Lindsey also gives credit to the SIF training she received and the curriculum resources for a lot of success in the classroom.” Many of the concepts that are introduced in the curriculum are broken down so students can easily understand. The teacher edition gives options and flexibility so I can introduce my own ideas and creativity as well.”
Ms. Lindsey concludes, “I did not know much about stocks and investing until I started teaching Stocks in the Future. I enjoy learning along with the students and now I’m thinking more seriously about my investing future.”
